2025 VMAS: TYLA CLINCHES BEST AFROBEATS AWARD AS NIGERIAN STARS GO HOME EMPTY-HANDED

Tyla holding her Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 VMAs, celebrating on stage as Nigerian nominees miss out.

South African music sensation, Tyla, has emerged winner of the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held Sunday night in New York.

The singer beat a star-studded lineup of Nigerian nominees to clinch the award with her chart-topping hit, Push 2 Start. Tyla, however, missed out on the ‘Best Choreography’ honour, despite her strong nomination.

African heavyweights Burna Boy and Ayra Starr were also in the running for top prizes but ended the night without wins.

On the global stage, American pop icon Lady Gaga stole the spotlight, taking home four major awards, including ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘Best Direction’, ‘Best Collaboration’, and ‘Best Art Direction’, making her the biggest winner of the night.

The 2025 VMAs featured electrifying performances and celebrated the best in music videos across multiple genres, further solidifying its status as one of entertainment’s most anticipated annual events.
