FRSC officers at a mobile court session in Calabar as traffic offenders are arraigned for bribery and violations.

In Calabar, a mobile court has convicted 34 traffic offenders for attempting to bribe Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers on duty. The court proceedings, held on Wednesday, were presided over by Magistrate Abigail Asuquo.

Bribe Offenders Get Fined or Face Jail

After all, 34 offenders pleaded guilty, Magistrate Asuquo offered them two options: pay a ₦10,000 fine or spend one week in jail. These penalties apply to anyone trying to bribe FRSC officers, she emphasized.

Additional Offences Also Penalized

Those caught for overloading or driving without a valid license received the same ₦10,000 fine. Meanwhile, seat belt violations attracted a ₦2,000 fine, and lack of a speed limiting device came with a ₦3,000 penalty.

FRSC Vows Zero Tolerance for Corruption

FRSC Sector Commander, Innocent Etuk, expressed concern about drivers offering bribes. He stressed the corps’ zero-tolerance policy on corruption and promised that anyone caught would face legal action.

Obey Traffic Laws or Face Legal Action

Commander Etuk urged all road users to follow traffic rules. This supports FRSC’s 2025 strategic goal of reducing road crashes and deaths by 10%.

He warned against overloading, phone use while driving, and ignoring seat belt rules, noting these violations cause many accidents.

Mobile Court Aims for Faster Trials

To make justice quicker, the FRSC had earlier applied for a mobile court setup under Section 10(8) of the FRSC Establishment Act (2007). The Chief Judge of Cross River approved the request, allowing the special court to start operations.
