Jerry Damara’s Defection Sparks Political Realignment in Gombe South
Jerry Damara has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking what many describe as a major political realignment in Gombe South. The prominent politician and business mogul made the switch following extensive consultations with regional stakeholders, signaling a shift in the political dynamics of the Tangale-Waja axis and beyond.
Jerry Damara Officially Joins APC
Damara, a key political figure in the Tangale-Waja region and Managing Director of Mesotho Group Limited, presented his APC membership card to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya on Thursday at the Government House in Gombe.
Speaking during the ceremony, Damara said his decision to join the ruling party was inspired by Governor Yahaya’s achievements and inclusive governance. “Your Excellency, from today, my loyalty to you and your administration is total. The developmental train you are driving is unstoppable, and I refuse to be left behind,” he declared.
He further explained that the move followed wide consultations with political stakeholders and elders across the Tangale-Waja area, who agreed to end years of division and unite behind the APC ahead of future elections.
Jerry Damara’s Defection Backed by Influential Delegation
Damara was accompanied by an influential delegation, including three former deputy governors, four local government chairmen, four members of the Gombe State House of Assembly, and former federal lawmakers, among other key leaders from Gombe South.
Governor Yahaya welcomed the defector, describing his defection as a “historic moment” and a “major breakthrough” for the APC in the region. He praised Damara’s influence and grassroots connection, noting that his entry would strengthen the party’s structure and appeal in southern Gombe.
Political Shifts in Gombe State
The defection comes amid growing political shifts across the state. Recently, over 1,000 members of both the APC and PDP in Lawanti, Akko LGA, joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), pointing to increasing political fluidity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In addition, opposition parties including the PDP, SDP, ADC, and Labour Party have formed a coalition known as the United Group, led by PDP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate Jibrin Barde, to challenge the APC’s dominance in the state.
Against this backdrop, Damara’s defection is seen as a high-stakes political move that could significantly impact the balance of power in Gombe South and beyond.
