Tensions are boiling over at Africa’s biggest refinery and now, a former senator is speaking out.

Senator Shehu Sani, known for his bold activism, has called out Dangote Refinery for allegedly firing over 800 Nigerian workers just for joining a union.

What’s going on behind the scenes? And could this spark an even bigger crisis?

Let’s break it down…

“Reinstate the Workers Now” – Shehu Sani Warns

In a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Sani didn’t hold back.

He demanded that the refinery immediately recall the sacked workers, calling the move a violation of constitutional rights and a threat to industrial peace.

His message was direct:

Senator Shehu Sani speaking at a press conference, looking serious and concerned. Behind him is a backdrop of the Dangote Refinery and workers protesting with placards. Tension fills the air as the refinery faces a major standoff with union members over workers' rights and mass layoffs.

“Dangote should recall the workers sacked because of their decision to join their trade unions.”

But that’s not all…

PENGASSAN Strike Heats Up — But Sani Says “Hold On”

Senator Sani also urged PENGASSAN, the powerful oil workers’ union, to suspend its decision to cut off gas supply to the refinery.

Why? He fears it could damage Nigeria’s already fragile economy.

“PENGASSAN should suspend their decision to cut off gas supply to the Dangote Refinery,” he added.

But the union isn’t backing down just yet…

Over 800 Workers Fired — Replaced by 2,000 Foreigners?

PENGASSAN claims the Dangote Refinery sacked over 800 Nigerians for joining the union and replaced them with more than 2,000 Indian workers.

They say this breaks Nigerian labour laws and violates international conventions on workers’ rights.

The response?
A nationwide strike, shutting down crude and gas supply — and shaking the oil & gas sector.

But what does Dangote have to say?

Dangote Refinery Fires Back: “This is Sabotage”

The refinery’s management has denied the allegations, calling the union’s strike:

“Reckless, lawless, and dangerous.”

They insist the dismissals were due to safety and efficiency issues, not union activity — and claim over 3,000 Nigerians still work at the plant.

So, who’s telling the truth?

Senator Sani: “Support the Refinery, But Follow the Law”

Sani praised the Dangote Refinery as a strategic national asset — something all Nigerians are proud of.

But he stressed that even billion-dollar projects must respect the law.

“The right of workers to unionise is embedded in the laws of our country.”
