With just one week left before the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum to the federal government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is preparing to initiate another nationwide strike. This decision comes in response to what the union describes as the government’s indifference to its long-standing demands.
In a recent communication to its members, the union expressed disappointment over what it termed the “continued lethargy” of the government in addressing issues affecting university lecturers and the nation’s public tertiary institutions.
Professor Piwuna expressed frustration that, despite the resolutions reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 28 at the University of Abuja, there has been “no meaningful development deserving of consideration” from the government.

He noted that negotiations that have been ongoing for more than eight years have produced minimal progress, leaving the union with no choice but to take decisive action to advocate for its demands.
Reiterating the union’s collective commitment, the ASUU President urged members to maintain unity and focus on their struggle to protect their welfare and enhance the Nigerian University System’s global competitiveness.
He urged members to mobilize fully, participate in congress meetings, and take directives only from recognized union leaders, their branch chairpersons, and zonal coordinators, as preparations for a possible strike action ramp up nationwide.
