Akume to Northern Politicians: Wait Until 2031 for Presidency

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged politicians from Northern Nigeria to shelve their presidential ambitions until 2031. Akume made this call during a two-day interactive session in Kaduna focused on strengthening government-citizen engagement.

The event, themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Unity,” was organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation. The SGF praised the foundation for providing a platform to evaluate democratic progress and encourage transparency in governance.

Akume highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has served for just over two years and has already delivered significant reforms. He noted improvements in national security, agriculture, and infrastructure, adding that Tinubu’s leadership has been inclusive and balanced across all regions.

“President Tinubu made a commitment to govern impartially, and he has remained true to that promise,” Akume stated.

He emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies has increased government revenues at the state level, enabling state governments to invest in large-scale projects and deliver better public services.

Akume warned against any political moves that could destabilize the progress made so far, urging Northern politicians to support the current administration until its full term ends in 2031.

“Do not join forces that may derail the development we’ve achieved. Let’s give the president time to complete his vision for Nigeria,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to fostering unity and driving sustainable development through continued collaboration with citizens and stakeholders.
