FG BOOSTS RENEWABLE ENERGY DRIVE IN HOSPITALS AND UNIVERSITIES — ECN REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE POWER

Federal Government and Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) promote renewable energy projects in hospitals and universities to enhance sustainable power supply

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing electricity challenges in public hospitals and universities through substantial investment in renewable energy.

Marking his two years in office, ECN Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi highlighted the success of the Renewed Hope Solarization Project under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which is accelerating the rollout of two-megawatt solar hybrid systems across public institutions nationwide.

The first phase of the project has already been completed at:
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (Kano)
General Hospital Bangi (Niger State)
Enugu Research Centre
University of Abuja

Dr. Abdullahi also noted that communities in Benue, Kebbi, Kaduna, Ekiti, and Osun States have benefited, with more institutions set to join in the second phase.

He revealed that the ECN is leading key initiatives to promote solar mini-grids and other clean energy projects, guided by the newly launched National Energy Policy and National Energy Master Plan, both designed to attract investment and improve project coordination.

In a major step forward, the Commission has also established a pilot Green Hydrogen Plant to support Nigeria’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.

“We are driving the domestication of green technologies to strengthen Nigeria’s clean energy future,” Abdullahi said.
