Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to peace and service to humanity, both within Nigeria and across the globe.

Jonathan made the declaration on Sunday at a special reception in Abuja, organised by Friends of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to honour him following his receipt of the 2025 Sunhak Global Peace Prize in Seoul, South Korea.

The former president said his life’s mission has always been centred on positively impacting others and contributing to global peace.

I wouldn’t say much, but only to thank you and to reassure you that my commitment to peace will continue. I will continue to do my best until the last day I live on earth. I believe that’s the only way I can serve God by serving man, Jonathan said.

He recalled his humble beginnings, describing how his early life struggles birthed his deep empathy for the underprivileged. He said seeing people suffer, or watching a nation in crisis, has always moved him to take action.

That has been my fear, and that was why I was very reluctant when I was approached to come to the centre, to be a vice president, he added.

Jonathan was honoured not just for his tenure in office but for his post-presidency efforts in mediation across Africa. He has led peace missions to Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Kenya, and Guinea-Bissau, among others.

Prominent Nigerians present at the reception included Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who described Jonathan as a symbol of hope and sacrifice.

You have put in a lot of effort to ensure there is peace in Nigeria, Africa and the world as a whole,”Obi said.

Azibaola Robert, Chief Host and Managing Director of Kakatar Group, described Jonathan as a man whose leadership and love for peace remain unmatched.

The 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize marks Jonathan as the first African and third global figure to receive the honour after former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
