Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, will receive the $20,000 cash reward promised to her by kits supplier HiRacer for winning silver at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

This assurance was given by Chief Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), during a meeting in Tokyo on Monday night with Amusan and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Bukola Olopade.

Okowa revealed that HiRacer was already in advanced talks with the Federation to fulfil its pledge to Amusan and to finalise a more rewarding long-term kits sponsorship deal for Nigerian athletes.

“There is no problem between Tobi and the Federation. I have worked with her for more than four years. It was just a brief misunderstanding. This new AFN board is responsive to our athletes’ needs, and we are committed to doing things differently,” Okowa said.

The AFN president described Amusan’s silver medal in the 100m hurdles final as a proud moment for Team Nigeria, praising her resilience and determination on the global stage.

He also commended the leadership of the NSC for prioritising athletes’ welfare, noting that allowances and bonuses at the championships were promptly settled.

Okowa expressed gratitude to the NSC Director-General and Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for their continued support of Nigerian athletes.
