Janet Hubert Reflects on Past Feud and Finds Healing at Atlanta’s V-103

Veteran actress Janet Hubert recently revisited a pivotal moment in her career during a stop at Atlanta’s V-103 radio station a place she now calls “the scene of the crime.”

Hubert, best known for her role as the original Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, was a guest on The Big Tigger Show when the topic of her decades-long feud with former co-star Will Smith resurfaced.

“This is the very station where Will dogged me out 30 years ago,” Hubert recalled, referring to the time when Smith reportedly told listeners that she wanted the series to be renamed The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show. The fallout from those remarks contributed to a rift between the two actors after Hubert’s exit from the sitcom in 1993, when she was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid.

A Healing Experience

Calling the visit “very cathartic and healing,” Hubert said it felt like things had come full circle.

When asked about where things stand with Smith today, Hubert was full of praise. “So good,” she said, crediting Smith with supporting her latest creative endeavor, the independent animated feature JG and the BC Kids.

“I’m going to give my baby his props,” she said warmly. “He put together the website with his team for me. He not only paid for it but also lent me his entire social media team to help.”

Official Reconciliation in 2020

The two officially reconciled in 2020 during The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special, which streamed on HBO Max.
