Tension escalated in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Monday morning as hundreds of angry residents stormed the streets to protest the continuous killings of indigence by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militants.
The protest, which began at Fawvwei Junction, was spearheaded by Christian leaders, including the state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Polycarp Lubo. The demonstrations disrupted traffic flow, causing heavy gridlock and leaving commuters stranded for hours.
Protesters, holding placards with inscriptions such as “Stop the Killings”, “We Want Peace”, and “Our Lives Matter Too”, decried the government’s silence over the incessant attacks. The crowd marched towards the Rayfield Government House, demanding action from authorities.
We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings, said Gyang Dalyop, a visibly agitated protester.
Another protester, Hannatu Philip, pleaded, “The government must intervene now before things spiral out of control.”
The protests come in the wake of recent coordinated attacks that claimed over 100 lives in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the last two weeks.
Residents say the killings have continued unchecked, fuelling fear and tension across the region. Local leaders and community members are now urging President Bola Tinubu and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to act swiftly before the situation worsens.
