NANS Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Insecurity

NANS leaders call on President Tinubu to declare state of emergency to tackle rising insecurity in Nigeria

NANS Urges Tinubu to Declare State Of Emergency

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on insecurity in the country, citing rising violence, banditry, and kidnappings affecting students and communities nationwide.

In a statement issued on Friday, NANS President Usman Nagwaza called on the federal government to empower security agencies and the Ministry of Defence to intensify operations against criminal elements. The students’ body stressed that decisive action is necessary to protect lives, restore peace, and create a safe environment for education.

NANS State of Emergency Insecurity Includes Defence Minister Support

“NANS does not represent barbarism or criminality. Our concern is Nigeria, especially students, who are directly affected by insecurity,” the statement read, highlighting the urgent need for federal intervention.

The group also defended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, against allegations linking him to criminal activities, describing such claims as politically motivated distractions from the fight against insecurity.

Strengthening National Security Efforts

NANS reiterated that a state of emergency would strengthen national efforts to combat banditry, kidnappings, and violent crimes, which have disrupted schools, businesses, and daily life in many parts of the country.

The call by NANS reflects growing public frustration over the federal government’s handling of security challenges and adds pressure on President Tinubu to take urgent and decisive action
